With the warmer months coming masters swimming clubs like Riverton were looking to boost their membership for the 2016 season.

From September to December all masters swim club memberships were discounted.
Prospective swimmers could join a club for four or 16 months at a lower per month cost than if they signed up in 2016.

Riverton masters swim club treasurer Graeme Pow said spring was the best time to join a club and get swimming over summer.

He said the club were always on the hunt for new members both young and old.

“You have to be at least 18 and there’s no upper limit,” he said.

“The only stipulation you have to be able to swim 50 metres unaided.

“There’s no requirement to be a good or fast swimmer but if you’re interested in competition then there’s plenty of opportunity for that as well.”

Mr Pow, an inaugural member of the Riverton masters club, said swimming was an excellent sport for fitness and fun.

“It’s very good cardiovascular fitness and because it’s in water you’re far less prone to injury like you are in sports like running, which has a bit of impact on the body,” he said.

“Most people don’t have the self discipline to push themselves but with a group there it’s much easier.”

“We have a coach on Monday nights who sets a program for each of the lanes and has tips or offers suggestions for improvements.”

Masters swimming Australia turned 40 last week.

The 37 masters swim clubs in WA have more than 1500 members, ranging in age from 18 to 95.
