The contents of Byford residents’ bins will be reviewed from next Monday following high contamination levels across Serpentine Jarrahdale households.

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale said bin tagging was a way of giving residents feedback about what was in their waste and recycling bins.

A tag would be placed on each bin to show whether contents were being sorted correctly.

“Bin auditors carry out a quick visual check of what’s in the bin at the kerbside before collection, simply by opening the lid and seeing what’s inside,” the shire said.

“Based on this check, information is recorded for each household.

“The tag left on the bin explains what was done well, what may need improving and offers general tips on what can and can’t go in the bins.”

The shire said auditors would also be door knocking throughout the program.

“We genuinely want to hear from you directly – whether that’s questions you have, challenges you’re facing or feedback about waste and recycling in your household,” the shire said.

The shire said the program was not intended to punish residents who may be placing incorrect items in their bins.

“The goal is to provide clear, practical guidance so sorting your waste is easier and less confusing,” it said.

“There are no fines or penalties issued as part of this program.”

Byford was selected as the focus area because it is highly walkable compared to other more rural suburbs in the shire.

Households chosen for the program will receive notification by mail before bin tagging begins and will not be required to complete any additional tasks.

“Just continue putting your bins out for collection on your usual day,” the shire said.

The program will run until April 14.
