With the new Superman movie flying into cinemas today, it’s a return to the big screen many fans of the saga will enjoy.
With a modern take on the age-old classic, Clark Kent, Superman’s alias, and his love Lois Lane are still reporters working for Daily Planet newspapers in what appears to be a historic building fit for modern purposes with televisions and desktop computers.
Kent has been posting articles with exclusive interviews between himself and Superman which caused Lane to question his journalism ethics, as well as warn Kent it may become suspicious to the public that he is really Superman.
In a bid to prove to Lane he doesn’t need to know the questions prior to an interview, Superman agreed to be interviewed by his girlfriend, with the hot topic being the way he stopped a war between Boravia and Jarhanpur (as well as his social media trolls).
With the political note of Boravia’s attempted invasion, it was suggestive of the reality of the European countries and their own political agenda and wars the media has been reporting on.
Superman, revived by the yellow sun and supported by a flying dog Krypto, begins the movie in Antarctica where his secret hideout is after losing a fight for what the audience was told “was for the first time”.
His nemesis in the movie was supervillain Lex Luthor, a rich businessman with access to all kinds of technology which he uses to try and defeat Superman.
In a turn of events, Superman along with the rest of Metropolis is shocked to learn his biological parents sent him to Earth from the planet Krypton not just as a guardian, but as a controller over the “simple minded” humans.
Now an outcast and on the hunt, Superman turns himself into the authorities who hand him over to Planet Watch, Luthor’s company.
While locked away in a pocket universe, Superman is tortured by Luthor who isolates him with kryptonite, weakening his strength and health.
Eventually, Superman breaks free, rescuing his dog and had the help of Lane and ‘Justice Gang’ members including Hawkgirl, Mr Terrific, and the Green Lantern played by Nathan Fillion of The Rookie who sported a terrible bleached, bowl haircut.
Proving himself as worthy to Earth and Metropolis, Superman defeats his enemy and returns to his Antarctica home with his robots who, like Superman, have grown more human with their increased time on Earth.
Audience members also experienced a brief introduction of Superman’s cousin, Supergirl, who embodies the nature of a drunk college girl, setting up for what possibly may be the next installment in the new DC Universe.
Directed by James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are also treated to a cameo from his brother, Sean Gunn, who was in Guardians of the Galaxy, or more well known as Kirk from the series Gilmore Girls.
Superman was played by up-and-coming actor David Corenswet, with Lois Lane played by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan, and Lex Luthor played by Nicholous Hoult of Warm Bodies and more recently, Nosferatu.
Action packed for sure with a heartwarming ending, but still undecided if another superhero movie full of CGI and digital effects is what was needed.
