The $235 million Westfield Carousel redevelopment and Canning town centre will be one of the first in a wave of new retail living developments to be built across Perth over the next decade.

The shopping centre will be tied into the City of Canning’s Cannington city centre overhaul, which included high density mixed use retail and residential accommodation.

Cecil Avenue would be the focus of the high density developments, identified in the city centre structure plan.

Canning chief executive Lyn Russell said retail living or mixed use developments in which residential, commercial and retail existed in close proximity created a diverse and energetic precinct.

“In the future residential development along Cecil Avenue and within (Carousel owner’s) Scentre group’s landholdings will be required as part of the City of Canning’s city centre structure plan,” she said.

“The development mix creates more amenity and recreation options in the area which allows higher density living and a more vibrant community.

“The Westfield development is important to the activation of the city centre. Together with the city centre structure plan the Westfield Carousel development will help to make the Canning city centre the new energy of the south east corridor of Perth.”

Ms Russell said the city was in the early stages of assessing a number of apartment projects within the city centre.

She said if constructed they would further reinforce the residential growth that is occurring in the city centre.

The development followed approval of stage one of a $400 million residential development near Garden city shopping centre in Booragoon.

The Carousel redevelopment was approved in December 2014 by the metro central joint development assessment panel.

Scentre group sought a review of several conditions of approval, which were being mediated through the state administrative tribunal.
