Thornlie residents near the intersection of Spring Road and Thornlie Avenue enjoyed the sweet smell of raw sewerage on Sunday, after a damaged wastewater main flooded the intersection.

Water Corporation service delivery manager Paul Prottey said a pipe break was reported on Sunday August 7 at 2.55pm, with crews on site within 45 minutes to commence repairs and disinfect the site.

He said there were no impacts to residents or businesses in the area, however Facebook comments point towards significant impact on local residents’ olfactory senses.

Rel Nerney raised the alarm on the Thornlie Community Noticeboard page, with Sam Charman posting a video of the intersection that was overflowing with sewerage on Monday.

He noted the overflow had dropped since Sunday but described the smell as, well, a word we can’t publish.

Traffic diversions were put in place between the Thornlie Avenue roundabout, with Mr Prottey saying they were likely to be removed on Wednesday.

“The cause is being investigated, however, there are a number of factors that can contribute to pipe breaks, including the material and location of the mains, age, third party damage, nearby construction and tree roots,” he said.

“We understand traffic delays can be frustrating and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to residents on their daily commute. “
