Students at Rossmoyne Primary School have participated in a languages (Chinese/Mandarin) program for more than a decade.

In addition to learning how to speak, read and write in Mandarin, they also learn about various traditional and cultural celebrations such as the Chinese or Lunar New Year  (which was originally known as Spring Festival), and the Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn Festivals.

Students also enjoy participating in extra-curricular activities including cooking traditional foods, participating in competitions, and calligraphy workshops.

Rossmoyne Primary School recently celebrated Chinese New Year at an assembly which was hosted by the Year 6 class.

The assembly included a performance of the play titled “The Race for the Chinese Zodiac” which explained how the Chinese zodiac animals came to be and how the order of the animals was decided upon.

The whole school sang “Gongxi, Gongxi”, which translates to “Congratulations”, and a mascot of a dragon appeared to wish the audience a “Happy Year of the Dragon”.
