A spate of serious crashes along a windy Perth Hills road has prompted one local not-for-profit group to help out with the purchase of a potentially lifesaving piece of equipment.

Ashendon First Intervention Inc., an organisation that provides emergency services to popular motorsport events such as the Make Smoking History Targa West Rally, recently assisted with the purchase of a defibrillator for the staff and patrons at Mundaring Weir Hotel.

President and operations coordinator Scott Baker said hotel publican Jens Jorgensen had put out the call for donations and the group were happy to help.

“The hotel is an area that historically has had numerous accidents and incidents including fatalities,” he said.

“Whilst it is not remote, the availability or access to a defibrillator is critical to a casualty’s survival when waiting on emergency services to arrive.

“It assists a first aider with monitoring vital signs and if the casualty has an irregular heart beat or in cardiac arrest, it can shock the heart back to normal rhythm.”
