Drivers and cyclists can now enjoy smoother and safer journeys across the Canning River in Gosnells, with the official opening of the new Station Street Bridge on Friday, June 20.

The two-lane concrete bridge replaced the old timber Cargeeg Bridge that was built in 1938 and had become a bottleneck for the 4,000 vehicles using the road each day.

The new structure is designed to support modern traffic loads and reduce delays for road users travelling between the Gosnells town centre and the Martin residential area, including nearby schools.

The $9 million project was delivered through a partnership between all three levels of government, with $4.5 million from the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program, $3.5 million from the State Government, and $1 million from the City of Gosnells.

The new bridge has been designed to allow for a future retrofit of a shared path.

As part of the upgrades, Station Street was realigned to connect to the new bridge. A shared path now links pedestrians and cyclists to the preserved Cargeeg Bridge, which has been retained as a crossing for foot and bicycle traffic only.

Local road lighting, line marking and signage have also been completed, and the new bridge has been designed to allow for a future retrofit of a shared path.

The City had closed Cargeeg Bridge during the build due to safety concerns, with a detour in place via Astley Street, Gerald Street, Albany Highway, Ferres Drive and Mills Road West. Temporary pedestrian access was maintained throughout the project.

The new bridge is expected to improve traffic flow and safety for years to come.
