The City of Armadale has started a new Aboriginal Art Group which will be running fortnightly on Mondays at the Champion Centre in Seville Grove.
The group has been named Armadale Aboriginal Arts and will be facilitated by Lesley Murray, a WA Women’s Hall of Fame inductee and an exhibiting artist at the Minnawarra Art Awards alongside her daughter.
Ms Murray said her artwork is inspired by her own Aboriginal heritage.
“I create art based on my Aboriginal heritage. It helps me greatly with knowing who I am and where I come from,” she said.
“It helps me connect with my Anawin culture, Traditional Custodians of the New England area of NSW.
“While I live in Western Australia, and have experienced the wonders of the Pilbara, I am strong in my identity and proud to be part of the oldest living culture in the world.”
Ms Murray said she uses her creative artwork to tell stories from her life experiences.
“My art is also an experimental journey in media/mediums to tell the stories from my childhood along with my inspirations from everyday life – being a mother and a creative woman in my own right,” she said.
“I also believe art helps build good mental health by freeing the mind of the everyday stresses of life by letting you rest and connect to your creative side.”
All Aboriginal artists are invited to join Ms Murray with a safe space promised for all levels of talent.
The city will provide paint supplies and lunch at the sessions, held from 10am until 1pm.
The next event is Monday June 9.
