A local library has taken the title of WA Community Facility of the Year for being an inclusive and engaging space for community members.

The Piara Waters Library received the award at last month’s Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) Awards of Excellence ceremony.

City of Armadale mayor Ruth Butterfield said the award reflects how the Piara Waters Library has met community needs.

“This win is particularly special,” she said.

“It’s not every day a library receives a Parks and Leisure Award, but it shows how modern libraries continue to evolve to meet community needs.

“Piara Waters Library is more than just a place to borrow books – it’s a learning hub, a youth space, a creative zone and a welcoming gathering place for one of the fastest growing parts of our city.

“This award is a testament to what can be achieved when you listen to the community and build something truly inclusive.”

The library has been open since September last year and was designed to cater to the youth and culturally diverse residents of Piara Waters and surrounds.

The Youth Space – which features high levels of technology – was designed with local youth residents who also included areas for study and quiet times.

PLA awards highlight Australian facilities which use innovative infrastructure and programs to foster community engagement.
