Churches across Cannington will come together next month for the annual World Day of Prayer service, with this year’s theme centred on Nigeria.
The ecumenical service will be held at St Michael and All Angels, 46 George Way, Cannington, on Friday 6 March at 7pm. The event is free and open to anyone interested.
World Day of Prayer is a global event held on the first Friday of March each year. It began in the United States and Canada in the 19th century and has been observed locally since 1986. It was founded on the premise of informed prayer and powerful action, promoting mission and social justice for women and children.
The Cannington service is being hosted this year by St Michael and All Angels, assisted by Cannington Uniting Church, St Joseph’s Catholic Church Queens Park, St Augustine’s Anglican Church Lynwood and the Syrian Orthodox Church.
Each year, the international committee selects a country of focus and theme, and a service is created around it. In 2026, the focus is Nigeria, with the theme “I will give you rest, come.”
Co-ordinator Kaye Mould said the aim was to promote peace and understanding of the challenges faced by Nigerian women and children.

“The service is important for local churches as it gives them an opportunity to meet together, and for the local community to experience church fellowship and friendship; and to find out how help can be offered to countries in need,” she said.
The service will include readings, prayers, songs, reflections and guest speakers, followed by fellowship and food. Several Nigerian families from the congregation will also share insights about life in Nigeria.
Community members are invited to attend.
