Byford locals got a taste of Japanese culture last week when families gathered for the free Japan Club community event.
Attendees played traditional Japanese games and made their own Japanese onigiri for an event fitted for all ages, without the need to get a passport stamped.
The Japan Club was an initiative by Gold Educational Tours which aimed to connect West Australian families to the Japanese culture to prepare for an influx of visitors.
Next month, 25 students will arrive in Byford for a 10-night stay, with local families encouraged to host a foreign student.
Byford mum Laura has previously hosted a foreign exchange student, and said it was a great experience.
“We love having our Japanese exchange students stay with us because they bring a wonderful spirit of curiosity and kindness into our home,” she said.
“Sharing our daily life and learning about each other’s culture creates unforgettable memories and lasting bonds.”
Host families can build international friendships from the comfort and familiarity of their own home and town.
