People hoping to cast a vote in the upcoming same sex marriage postal survey will need to enrol to vote by August 24 to be eligible.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics will be conducting the Australian Marriage Law survey from next month and only people enrolled to vote will be able to participate.

Member for Armadale Tony Buti said it was important young people enrolled so they could have a say important issues.

“I urge all young people of voting age who are not currently on the electoral roll to immediately register to vote in the so-called postal plebiscite on marriage equality,” he said.

“While the postal option is flawed it is important for young people to have their voices heard and counted.”

To be eligible to enrol you must be an Australian citizen and have lived at your address for at least a month.

Ballot papers for the same sex marriage vote will begin arriving in the mail from September 12 and must be returned by November 7 to be counted.

The vote will not be compulsory.
