Thomas Vassallo has been commended for going above and beyond to serve SJ.

The WA Rangers Association (WARA) has announced Thomas Vassallo of the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale as the 2026 WARA Ranger of the Year.

Mr Vassallo is described as an outstanding example of the modern ranger, combining professionalism, enforcement and compliance with genuine compassion, education and community engagement.

“With eight years of service to the Shire, including five years as Coordinator of Rangers and Community Safety, Thomas has consistently demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the community. His approach is built on respect, fairness and a strong focus on achieving positive outcomes,” a WARA spokesperson said.

“A key feature of Thomas’ work is his ability to build meaningful relationships across the community. His ongoing collaboration with Homelessness We Care has enabled him to support vulnerable community members while maintaining Council responsibilities and community standards. Through this partnership, Thomas has helped connect people with support services and facilitated access to practical assistance such as free pet microchipping.

“Thomas is also a passionate advocate for community education. His engaging visits to schools, kindergartens and community groups help educate residents about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, microchipping and community safety. His creative approach, including his well-known microchipped toy dog, “Sparkles”, and a Ranger-themed children’s book, has helped create positive connections between young people and their local Ranger Service.”

Mr Vassallo’s proactive approach to his job extends to other areas beyond the typical remit of a Shire ranger.

“Thomas consistently demonstrates initiative in responding to emerging community issues. His work around the opening of Byford Train Station, community safety, illegal off-road vehicle use, littering and local neighbourhood concerns demonstrates his ability to work collaboratively with residents, businesses, sporting clubs, Police and other agencies to achieve practical outcomes.

“His contribution is perhaps best reflected in the relationships he has developed with the community. He is known for being approachable, reliable and compassionate while maintaining the professionalism and integrity required of the ranger role.

“His commitment, leadership and willingness to go above and beyond have strengthened the reputation of Ranger Services and demonstrated the important role rangers play in creating safe, connected and thriving communities.”
