This year’s theme reflects on the ongoing connection between past, present and future.

The City of Canning is inviting the community to reflect, learn and connect during National Reconciliation Week, which runs from May 27 to June 3.

This year’s theme ‘Bridging Now to Next’, encourages Australians to build a future grounded in respect and shared strength in respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The theme’s artwork, by Kalkadoon woman, Bree Buttenshaw, features native plants known for thriving after fire. This symbolises resilience and renewal.

The City will host three free events and support activities led by Reconciliation WA, of which it is now an official member.

“National Reconciliation Week is a meaningful opportunity to shine a spotlight on our shared histories, cultures and achievements with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Canning and beyond,” said City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall.

“We all have a role to play in reconciliation. I encourage all Australians to share, learn and tell the truth about our nation’s history so that we can be guided by past lessons and forge respectful relationships across our communities.”

The City’s program includes two indigenous Sneaker Lab workshops and an Aboriginal Cultural Learning Experience, offering opportunities to engage with First Nations culture and stories.
