The City of Canning’s Whaleback Golf Course in Parkwood is set for an $8 million upgrade to its driving range and café facilities.

The council approved the project at its May council meeting, with all funding to come from Whaleback’s own operations.

The plan includes adding entertainment bays to the driving range, expanding the Whaleback Café, and installing new kitchen and toilet facilities.

Mayor Patrick Hall said the upgrades would make the course one of the most modern golfing facilities in the State.

“Whaleback is one of the most popular golfing facilities in Western Australia,” he said.

“Since the City took over 18 months ago, we have overseen major improvements to the offerings – and we are far from finished.”

A $2.5 million netting project was recently completed, with 36-metre-high nets improving safety and reducing lost balls.

The new works, which start in July and finish by December, will include improved hitting bays with advanced ball tracking technology and a larger alfresco dining area.

We see Whaleback as much more than just a golf course. This significant investment will not only upgrade the facility for golfers, it will realise our vision of Whaleback being a vibrant a community destination where golf is played,” explained Mayor Hall.

The driving range will stay open during construction, but sometimes may be restricted. A temporary food and drink outlet will also be set up while the café is upgraded.

In 2024, Whaleback recorded 92,000 rounds of golf and more than 8.5 million golf balls hit on the range.
