The Byford youth precinct, which will be home to a skate park, bike pump track as well as other activities, is well underway to accommodate for the growing number of young people in the area.

The local and state government-funded project had Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale President Rob Coales, Darling Range MLA Hugh Jones and MLC Klasey Hirst check in on the site earlier this week.

According to a shire report, the existing facilities at the town centre were popular among residents and there were concerns about overcrowding at the nearby Briggs Park.

“This can lead to conflict amongst the different types of user groups,” the report said.

“The facilities currently cater primarily to skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders.

“This means that young people who wish to engage in other physical activities such as basketball and parkour are missing out.”

The shire said the number of residents in the area who are under working age will increase by more than 60 per cent in 2026.

SJ Shire said it hopes to give residents new opportunities through physical activity and skill development as well as positive social interactions among young people.
