A fire at a Kelmscott home that caused about $150,000 damage was believed to have been started by a discarded cigarette.

Fire crews from Armadale, Maddington and Murdoch were called to the property on Willowmead Way on September 11 about 2.12am.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said there was one person home at the time of the blaze and the fire was deemed under control at 2.38am.

Authorities were called to the house later that morning after receiving reports that the roof was smouldering.

The fire was extinguished again by 8.27am.

St John Ambulance officers transported a man aged in his 60s to Armadale Hospital for treatment.
