Last Local owner Mickey Phull already knows he has the best steak sandwich in the metropolitan area, but he’ll have to wait until the Australian Hotels Association WA Awards For Excellence on November 7 to find out if he has the best steak sandwich in the State.

The Canning Vale pub is up for a raft of awards, including best retail bottleshop, responsible service of alcohol, casual pub dining, family dining and live entertainment venue.

While all the award nominations are worthy of applause, it’s the title of WA’s best steak sandwich, between Mickey’s French onion dip steak sandwich and Karratha’s Northwest Brewing Company’s more traditional offering that he’s most excited about.

“Obviously we won the best steak sandwich metro title, but this is for the big one, the state title,” he said.

“It’s between us and the Karratha venue, they were the regional winner and they like to announce that on the night and really build it up.”

Mickey puts the continued success of Last Local down to sticking to traditional values.

““This is really about being a local pub from a time when your local pub was a place you could go to relax, and a place that was reliable,” he said.

“We’re not a place that promotes heavy drinking, we don’t promote a happy hour or anything like that, we don’t support rowdy crowds at all.

“Our vision is to be a friendly place to have a meal and a quiet drink, and I think that is a large part of why we made the finals.

“We’re proud of our nominations, I think we’re lucky to be finalists in both the family dining and casual pub dining categories.”
