A mix of familiar faces and newcomers will guide the City of Gosnells for the next four years, following the official declaration of the 2025 local government election results.

Peter Abetz, Glenn Dewhurst, Serena Williamson, Dillon Mason, Malik Sajjad and Leah Szczyglak have been elected as councillors for the Gosnells District, each to hold office until October 20, 2029.

Re-elected councillor Peter Abetz said he was humbled by the strong support from residents. He praised the smooth election process and said he looked forward to working with the three newly elected councillors.

“While I enjoyed working with all of the councillors who were up for re-election, the three newly elected councillors will bring new and different perspectives to the table, and I look forward to getting to know them and working with them,” he said.

Mr Abetz said his focus would remain on the overall wellbeing of the city and its residents. “I will continue to carefully weigh the evidence and facts for everything that comes before council and make decisions with integrity.

I have a special interest in waste disposal and recycling, and in seeing the areas along the Canning and Southern River developed into beautiful public open space for passive recreation.”

Councillor Glenn Dewhurst said he was grateful for the trust residents had shown.

“The election has shown how deeply our community cares about the future of our city,” he said. “My focus will be on creating safer, more connected and sustainable neighbourhoods. I’ll continue championing the Safe Communities Now project, bring the Harmony Fields Activation Strategy to life, support local sport and drive the growth of our urban tree canopy.”

Newly elected councillor Dillon Mason described the result as unexpected and humbling. “It was not what I was thinking would happen at all,” he said.

“The election process has been fair and transparent and it has been encouraging to see so many residents, in particular first-time voters, taking an active interest in our local election.”

Mr Mason said he would focus on strengthening community connection and ensuring council decisions are made transparently and with genuine community input.

Councillor Malik Sajjad said he was honoured to have been elected and would prioritise listening to residents, improving local infrastructure, supporting small businesses and enhancing community safety and youth programs.

“To everyone who supported me — thank you,” he said. “I’ll work hard every day to represent you with integrity and help build a safer, stronger and more connected City of Gosnells.”

A special council meeting was held on Tuesday night to swear in the new councillors and elect the Deputy Mayor.

Of 81,438 registered electors in the City, 25,371 ballots were returned – a voter turnout of   31 percent.
