Thousands of preloved books will fill the Canning Agricultural Pavilion later this month when the Annual Cannington Book Sale returns for its 17th year.
Running from Saturday, September 27 to Tuesday, September 30, the four-day event will offer thousands of books across every genre, from children’s favourites to rare and collectable editions. Entry is free and parking is available on site.
The sale was started by volunteers from the Save the Children South of River Branch to give people access to quality books at reasonable prices while also preventing books from going to landfill.
Event organiser Sonia Holmes said it has grown into a major community event.
“The sale is getting bigger and better each year, a real community has developed around it over the years,” she said.
“Each year is a special event, as we never know what we will have on offer, as all books are donated by the public.”
Among this year’s highlights is a Treasure Trove section of rare and unusual finds, along with two special donated collections.
“The books in the Chris Tyler collection were bequeathed to us by Chris in his will, they are largely Military, War, History and Australiana books,” Ms Holmes said.
“We had a long-time customer donate their lifetime collection of Sci Fi books to us as they knew we would get the best value for money and that the money would go to a great cause.”
Families are also well catered for with a dedicated children’s room filled with beanbags, mats and high-quality children’s books.

“So many families visit together, and it is pleasing to see generations all come together to buy their preferred books,” Ms Holmes said.
“Many children and families make use of the children’s room. We get so many high-quality children’s books donated and it is lovely to see children engaging in reading.”
Funds raised from the sale support Save the Children programs in Australia and overseas.
“This is an annual community book sale with quality books for sale at reasonable prices which assist Save the Children in Australia and overseas,” Ms Holmes said.
Organisers are calling for volunteers on Friday, September 26, 2025 from 8am to 5pm to help set up the event. Volunteers must be fit and able to lift boxes of books.
The sale will run from 9am to 5pm each day at the Canning Agricultural Pavilion, corner of Albany Highway and Station Street. Cash and EFTPOS payments will be accepted.
