Cannington has been selected as one of the sites for a major housing project that will deliver 100 new apartments, including 80 affordable and 20 social homes.

The development will be built by EMCO Building as part of a $443 million partnership between the State and Federal governments. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2026.

Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the City had long advocated for development on the land, which fronts Cecil Avenue and sits opposite the Cannington Train Station.

“Whilst the development is a welcomed first stage, the city hopes that the portion of land fronting Sevenoaks Street is also developed in the near future given it presents an even greater opportunity to create a landmark development with additional height and active commercial frontages in line with the City’s Activity Centre Plan,” he said.

Mr Hall said the site’s location meany=t new residents would have access to public transport, Westfield Carousel, nearby parks and community facilities such as Cannington Leisureplexes.

He added that the apartments would be managed by a community housing provider, which would help address concerns raised in the past about social housing developments.

“As a build to rent project the development will also be managed by a community housing provider, providing direct oversight of tenants and addressing any onsite issues that may arise,” Mr Hall said.

Cannington MLA Ron Sao said boosting housing supply was essential to meet growing demand.

“Here in Cannington, the construction of 100 apartments by EMCO Building will include 80 affordable and 20 social homes, which a community housing provider will manage,” Mr Sao said.

“Social housing provides a crucial safety net for some of the most vulnerable in our communities, including seniors, victims of domestic violence and people living with disabilities.”
