Struggling to pay your water bills? You need HUGS

More struggling households across Western Australia will soon get a helping hand with their water bills, as the State Government expands its Hardship Utility Grant Scheme (HUGS) to include public housing tenants.

The move means eligible tenants who owe money for water can apply for a one-off grant that covers 85 per cent of their debt, up to $640, or up to $1,060 for those living north of the 26th parallel.

The support is aimed at helping people stay connected to essential services during tough times, and comes as part of the Cook Government’s broader cost-of-living relief measures.

Community Services Minister Matthew Swinbourn said the expanded grant would give relief to those who need it most.

“We’re ensuring that more Western Australians remain connected to utilities during times of financial hardship,” he said.

“Additionally, tenants will be offered financial support, giving them the tools to successfully manage their budgets.”

The scheme also includes referrals to support services such as financial counselling, Foodbank and legal advocacy.

Housing and Works Minister John Carey said the change fulfilled an election promise and builds on the government’s ongoing efforts to support renters.

“This measure is another way our government is targeting support to keep people in safe and secure housing,” Mr Carey said.

“Since 2021 our government has invested $5.8 billion in housing and homelessness measures.”

More than 13,000 households have received help through HUGS since July last year.

Eligibility criteria and details about how to apply are available on the WA Government website.
