Post office rates payment scrapped as costs rise

Gosnells residents will no longer be able to pay their rates at Australia Post, after the City of Gosnells scrapped the option to keep overall costs down.

The change comes as Australia Post increased its charges to the City by 60 percent, with Mayor Terresa Lynes revealing it would have cost about $100,000 this year to continue offering the service.

“Only 5,000 of our 52,000 ratepayers currently pay their rates at the post office, which works out to around $20 per transaction,” she said. “This service no longer offers value for money.”

Mayor Lynes said the city wanted to avoid passing rising costs on to all ratepayers.

“We know our ratepayers want to keep rates as low as possible, and we believe it’s unreasonable   to pass this added cost on to all ratepayers.

There are still a number of ways residents can pay their rates, including direct debit, BPAY, online through the City’s website, phone payments, or FlexiPay using the QR code on their notice.

Payments can also be made in person at the Civic Centre.

Rates notices will begin arriving by post or email in the coming weeks.

The City is also encouraging anyone facing financial difficulty to reach out and discuss payment plans.
