A celebration of voices and culture

Last year’s NAIDOC Week exhibition was a huge hit with local residents.

NAIDOC Week is returning with a series of free community events that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history and young leaders of the future.

Running from July 6 to July 13, this year’s NAIDOC Week theme ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’. It honours the strength of young people, the vision of communities, and the legacy of ancestors.

Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the City was proud to support and host events that recognise the rich and diverse cultures of Whadjuk Noongar, Noongar, and wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

“NAIDOC Week is a celebration of the oldest continuous living cultures on earth and is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories,” he said.

NAIDOC began as a movement for recognition and rights and has grown into a national celebration of Indigenous voices, culture and resilience. This year marks 50 years of NAIDOC.

The City’s free events include a NAIDOC Art Exhibition at Riverton Library from July 5 to 13 July, an annual Community Lunch with Langford Aboriginal Association on July 11, and an indigenous Sneaker Design Lab for children aged 6 and over on July 12

““Events such as the NAIDOC Art Exhibition provide a connection to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and I encourage all Canning residents to take part and celebrate the City’s rich cultural diversity,” Mayor Hall said.
