Drivers await news of intersection upgrade

A busy intersection in Canning Vale is set for an upgrade, but the City of Gosnells it is still waiting for information from the State Government about what the project will involve.

The Nicholson Road and Warton Road intersection was listed in the 2025-26 State Budget as part of a $599 million investment in congestion relief projects promised during the last election. The upgrade is to be delivered by the City of Gosnells.

However, City Chief Executive Officer Ian Cowie said the City had not been briefed on the details.

He said, “The State Government is yet to inform the City of Gosnells about this project.

“The City anticipates liaising with Main Roads WA regarding the project details soon.”

Local residents have raised concerns about the intersection, citing long delays at the roundabout, especially during school runs and peak hours. They also mentioned safety issues caused by driver confusion and congestion.

One local said it can take up to 15 to 20 minutes to get through the intersection during the afternoon rush, leading some drivers to take risks due to frustration and confusion over lane use.

“Lots of people take risks because of the wait to get through, and the fact that a lot of people don’t indicate correctly,” they said.

Another said: “They should plan roads for 10 years ahead, not just current traffic; even now, it’s not adequate.”

It’s not yet clear whether the Nicholson-Warton intersection upgrade will involve similar infrastructure or traffic lights. Some residents said they would prefer traffic signals or additional lanes to reduce congestion.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said in the Budget release that the investment would help reduce pressure on key roads.

“We took a transport plan to the people of Western Australia, and we’re wasting no time in delivering,” she said.

While the upgrade is officially listed and funded, no timeline or design has been released. The City of Gosnells said it would share more information once it receives further advice from the State.
