With a focus on future leaders and proud traditions, the City of Gosnells will mark NAIDOC week with a week-long celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture beginning Monday, July 7.
Locals are invited to join a flag-raising ceremony at the Civic Centre, where cultural performances and a light lunch will mark the start of a week-long celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
“Whether it’s discovering bush tucker on a walk-through Mary Carroll Park or immersing yourself in traditional songs and storytelling, the City will be hosting a range of free events to celebrate NAIDOC Week,” Mayor Terresa Lynes said.
This year’s theme, ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy, honours the wisdom of past generations and shines a light on the voices of young and emerging First Nations leaders.
The celebrations will also include the return of the popular NAIDOC Week Art Exhibition, which will run from Tuesday, July 8 to Friday, July 18 in the Civic Centre reception area. The exhibition features the work of well-known local Aboriginal artists, as well as up-and-coming young talent.
“We encourage people to come along to support local Indigenous artists – you will even get the chance to purchase Aboriginal art to display at home or in your business or workplace,” Mayor Lynes said.
The City said it is proud of its strong Noongar heritage and works closely with local Indigenous families and organisations to ensure their voices remain central to community life.
