The Kelmscott Agricultural Society is hoping to get the next generation involved in the Kelmscott Show through a clever new cadets program.

The KAS cadets will see students in two separate groups aged 10 to 14 and 15 to 18 meet in March next year and every month after that to have a say in and help organise next year’s show.

The students aged 10 to 14 will get to ask and learn about putting their works in the exhibition.

They will also get the opportunity to work on their pieces under the direction of mentors.

The 15 to 18 age group will hear from mentors who work in various roles in the show about their work.

They can then decide which one of the mentors they would like to learn more from which could progress them to volunteering in that area at next year’s show.

Both groups will have tasks to complete throughout the year.

Cadets coordinator Tara Mucciarone said the cadets program was a great opportunity for local kids to gain some experience.

“It will help bring children into the show in a more relaxed and fun way,” she said.

“It’s a fun program and the students can learn however much they want.

“At least they will go into the community with something a bit more than school.

“They will be able to put it on their resume and especially for the older kids employers will see they’ve volunteered or done this program and they will have a bit of an edge over people that haven’t.”
