Artists across Perth are invited to pick up their brushes, cameras and clay tools as entries open for the 2025 Canning Art Awards.
Running since 2000, the annual Awards have become one of the City’s most popular cultural events, shining a spotlight on creative talent from across Western Australia.
Entries are open from August 4 to August 22 for artists aged 12 and over, with traditional and contemporary works welcomed across a wide range of categories.
Entries close on Friday, August 22 at 5pm. Artwork must be delivered on Saturday, September 20 between 12pm and 5pm. The Opening night and Award Presentations will be held on Friday September 26 from 6pm to 9pm at Riverton Library. The exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday, September 27 to Saturday, October 4, between 10am and 3pm daily, except Monday. Unsold artworks must be collected on Sunday, October 5 from 2pm to 5pm.
Entry is limited to the first 200 submissions that meet eligibility requirements. It is free for young artists aged 12 to 17, while adults aged 18 and over will pay an entry fee of $35.20. Artists may submit one entry only. All entries must comply with the terms and conditions available on the City’s website. Submissions can be made online or through hard copy forms available at the City Administration Building or City of Canning libraries.
This year introduces two new standalone sections – Painting on Canvas and Painting on Paper – offering more clarity for artists wanting to showcase their work in a preferred medium. Other categories include Drawing, Sculpture or Textile, Mixed Media, Photography and Digital Art.
A prize pool of more than $13,500 will be shared across both adult and youth entries. Each adult category winner will take home $1000, while winners in the 12 to 17 age group will receive $500. An additional $1000 will be awarded for the City of Canning Resident Award, People’s Choice Award, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Artist Award.
Mayor Patrick Hall said the Canning Art Awards continue to be a proud platform for artists at all stages of their creative journey.
“Each year, we are inspired by the quality, creativity and bold storytelling that artists bring to the Canning Art Awards,” he said.
“This event gives local and emerging artists, especially our young people, the opportunity to present their work in a professional gallery setting, gain public exposure, and potentially take home well-deserved recognition and prize money.”
All works will be exhibited at Riverton Library from September 27 to October 4, open daily from 10am to 3pm (closed Monday). A special opening night will take place on September 26, with all entries professionally curated for the event.
Art lovers will also have the chance to purchase adult artworks and vote for their favourite piece in the People’s Choice Award.
