Former Byford Secondary College student Roxanne Roux has been drafted for Fremantle Dockers AFLW.

Roxanne Roux’s dreams have come true with the football star finding out she has been selected in this year’s NAB AFL Women’s draft.

The 17-year-old was picked up by the Fremantle Dockers as pick number 12 which was the highest possible selection for a player who nominated for the West Australian pool.

The former Byford Secondary College student said the achievement was years in the making for her.

“Myself and my family have worked so hard to get here with what seems like endless hours of driving, patience, money and time,” she said.

“It’s really a dream come true but my goal isn’t over yet.

“Short term was to be drafted, long term is to play and keep playing until I can’t.”

Miss Roux first started her playing career at Forrestdale Football Club before a move up north saw her play in league games in Dongara with the boys.

Moving back to Perth the talented ruck pulled on her boots and took to the field with the East Fremantle Sharks for the past three years.

Miss Roux said the team environment at Fremantle Dockers is extremely welcoming and she  looks forward to learning from the close-knit group of talented players.

“Female football is one of the fastest growing sports at the moment so it’s great to have young girls and women to get involved either for the first time or re-joining the sport after many years,” she said.

“Looking towards the future you can never tell how you’ll end up or where you’ll be, I just hope to keep playing AFL and just take it day by day.

“The future of AFLW is not going to be driven by one individual or a small group but rather the people who back their teams to go in and get the job done and hopefully come home with a premiership.”
