NAIDOC round brings past and present players together

Beyond the footy, the Hawks found time to celebrate indigenous culture.

Last Saturday was far more than a day of football for the Gosnells Hawks.

It was a celebration of culture, community and connection as we proudly hosted our annual NAIDOC Round, bringing together past and present players, families, supporters and the wider community.

With cultural performances, NAIDOC celebrations, a Past Players’ Day and the 1996 reunion, the club showcased what makes it such a special place both on and off the field.

While the football produced mixed results, the overwhelming success of the day was measured by the incredible atmosphere and community spirit.

Women

The Women set the tone early with an impressive 5.2 (32) to 3.4 (22) victory over Willetton. Their relentless pressure and teamwork ensured the Hawks started the day on the right foot. Bindi Pickett was outstanding, earning the NAIDOC Football, while Taneesha Coyne and Brianna Pickett were also among the team’s best performers.

Colts

The Colts continued their outstanding season with another polished display, defeating Curtin Uni Wesley 9.10 (64) to 4.6 (30). It was another complete four-quarter effort from a side that continues to build confidence each week. Deklin Norgate capped off an excellent performance by taking home the NAIDOC Football, while Jesse Vanderplank and Derek Bropho also impressed.

Reserves

The Reserves were involved in one of the closest contests of the day but were unable to capitalise on their opportunities, going down to Canning Vale 5.5 (35) to 7.7 (49). Despite the result, the Hawks never stopped fighting, with Cody Staines recognised as the NAIDOC Football recipient. Charlie Miller and William Crockett also worked tirelessly throughout the match.

League

The League side faced a strong Canning Vale outfit, eventually falling 6.5 (41) to 14.11 (95). Although the scoreboard didn’t reflect the effort, the Hawks continued to compete until the final siren and showed plenty of character throughout the afternoon. Kyle Dougan was recognised with the League NAIDOC Football for his outstanding contribution.

Thirds

The Thirds collected four valuable premiership points courtesy of a Coolbellup forfeit, giving them the bye victory.

While the results produced two wins from five, the football was only part of what made the day memorable.

The club’s NAIDOC celebrations were embraced by everyone in attendance, with the cultural performances, community involvement and strong support creating a fantastic atmosphere from the opening bounce until the final siren.

Gosnells Football Club extends its sincere thanks to every volunteer, performer, sponsor, player and supporter who helped make the day such a success. The club is incredibly proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week alongside its football community and looks forward to building on the event again in 2027.

Attention now turns to the club’s next major social event, Ladies’ Day, on Saturday, 18 July, where another fantastic day is expected at Gosnells Oval. Tickets remain available for those wishing to attend.
