Leach Highway intersection upgrade set to begin

Work is about to begin on major upgrades along one of Perth busiest east-west routes, with improvements planned at several key intersections on Leach highway.

Stage One of the project will start in the coming weeks and will focus on the intersection at Leach Highway and Corinthian Road East. The upgrade will remove the right turn from Corinthian Road East to improve traffic flow and safety.

The works are part of the State Government’s Leach Highway Improvements Project, a key election promise, that intends to tackle long-standing safety concerns between Webb Street and Vahland Avenue.

After community consultation and traffic modelling in 2024, the project now includes upgrades at three intersections: Corinthian Road East- Right turn removed, all other movements remain; Fifth Avenue- Right turn removed, all other movements remain; Beatrice Avenue- New traffic signals and a dedicated left-turn lane added.

Stage One is expected to wrap in August.

Stage Two, covering the Fifth Avenue and Beatrice Avenue upgrades, will begin in 2026 or 2027 once service relocations are complete.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, said the works would deliver safer outcomes and better access for nearby residents.

“The improvements have been based upon detailed traffic modelling, crash history and existing intersection spacing on the highway, to determine the best result for road users in the area. These upgrades are critical, but we know road works can cause disruption to the local community, so I want to thank everyone in advance for their patience,” she said.

Riverton MLA Dr Jags Krishnan welcomed the project’s launch.

He said, “Improving the safety of intersections along Leach Highway was a key election commitment of our government, and I am thrilled to see the works now getting underway. The community were strong in their view that safety along Leach Highway needed to be improved, and these works will deliver exactly that.”
