City of Canning residents are encouraged to nominate their local heroes for the Auspire – Australia Day Council Western Australia Community Citizen of the Year Awards, with nominations now open.

Recognising local heroes for over 20 years, these awards highlight individuals and groups who have made a significant impact on the Canning community.

The honours are presented in four categories: Community Citizen of the Year for individuals over 16, Young Community Citizen of the Year for those aged 16-30, Senior Community Citizen of the Year for people aged 65 and older, and Active Citizenship for community groups or events.

Mayor Patrick Hall hopes to see a rise in nominations for the Community Citizen of the Year Awards this year.

“Last year, we had 24 nominees; it would be great to see even more of our local community heroes nominated and recognised for their outstanding contributions,” he said.

“We are proud to support the Community Citizen of the Year Awards and look forward to celebrating our winners as part of our Australia Day Family Fun Day celebrations on 26 January 2025.”

Nominations can be made for contributions to health, fundraising, voluntary services, the environment, education, sports, arts, businesses, social inclusion, or any other area that enhances the community’s well-being.

In a survey of 2024 recipients, 85 per cent of respondents indicated that the Awards promote active citizenship, while 91 per cent felt they are an excellent way to recognise leaders. Additionally, 86 per cent agreed that the Awards contribute to making communities more inclusive.

Nominations for the 2025 Community Citizen of the Year Awards are open until 31 October 2024.
