A trip to the local park with her children and dogs has turned into an award-winning moment for Gosnells resident Kate Knight.
Kate was one of the winners of Communicare’s Love My Burb Photography Competition during Families Week 2026, taking out the major prize with her photo, Fun in the Park – William Lane Park.
She said the phone call telling her she had won came as a complete surprise.
“I was literally dropping my daughter off at kindy when they called,” Kate said.
“They just said, ‘Congratulations, you’ve won.’ I was shocked because you take a photo and don’t really think you’re going to win anything.”
The winning image wasn’t carefully planned. It was taken during one of the family’s regular visits to William Lane Park, where Kate takes her four children and two kelpie-cross dogs almost every day.
“It was just in the moment,” she said.
“My daughter was running after the dogs and I thought, ‘That’s a nice photo.’ A couple of weeks later I saw the competition and decided to enter it.”
Kate said William Lane Park had become a favourite because it caters for both children and pets.
“It’s got a kids’ playground and an off-leash dog park, so the dogs can run around while the kids have fun as well,” she said.
She is also looking forward to planned upgrades at the park in the coming months.
Although she enjoys taking photos, Kate describes herself as an everyday photographer, using her iPhone to capture family memories.
“I don’t have the best memory, so I love looking back at photos,” she said.
“I’ve got a four-year-old, two-year-old twins and an eight-month-old, so it’s nice to look back and remember those moments and see how much they’ve grown.”
Kate said she hopes people who see her winning photo feel a sense of happiness.

“You can see this little girl running through the park and just enjoying the day,” she said.
“There’s no worry. It’s just a nice photo to look at.”
She believes parks play an important role in bringing families together.
“I want families to get outside, enjoy nature and spend time together,” she said.
“That’s what parks are for.”
Kate also praised the City of Gosnells for the activities it provides for local families.
“They run park and play sessions, Baby Toddler Fest and school holiday activities,” she said.
“My children absolutely love them. There are lots of things that are free or very low cost, and it’s something we’ve really enjoyed.”
Winning the competition has encouraged Kate to keep taking photos, even if she doesn’t expect to win another award.
“I don’t think I’ll ever stop taking photos,” she said.
“They help me remember our life and all those little moments that might otherwise be forgotten.”
