Food donations needed to support local school children

Local not-for-profit organisation Communicare is calling on donations of food and other household staples to help support the young people and their families at the Communicare Academy in Kenwick.

Communicare Academy is a Curriculum and Re-engagement in Education (CaRE) School, providing year 7-12 students with a unique approach to re-engagement in their education journey, focusing on wellbeing and education support.

Principal Matthew Borgward said this included flexible learning options and modified curriculums to re-engage students at-risk of falling through the cracks.

“Right now, so many families across Perth are struggling with cost-of-living pressures,” Mr Borgward said.

“As part of our support for the wellbeing of the students and their families at Communicare Academy, we want to ensure they can enjoy nutritious meals, whatever their circumstances.

“We work with our young people on the importance of healthy eating as part of our school curriculum, which includes getting them in the kitchen for hands-on cooking experiences.

“Our intention is to ensure these young people are able to take this knowledge home to share with their families.

“Nobody is immune from the financial pressures across WA communities at the moment, so anything we can do to help ease the burden in a very real and practical way makes a huge difference.”

Mr Borgward said the Communicare Academy would appreciate any donations, especially local businesses who are keen to partner with the school, “in supporting the amazing young people at the Communicare Academy and their families”.

“We currently have 24 students and their families who we support with weekly food hampers and other supplies. Most of this food is provided by OzHarvest, Foodbank and other local charities, but sadly demand is far greater than what we can meet.

“The Academy has been topping-up these hampers as best we can, but this isn’t a long-term solution, and our resources can only stretch so far.”
