Council moves to secure long-term waste services

The City of Canning is moving forward with plans to lease land at Bannister Road, Canning Vale, to national recycling company Re.Group.

The decision, which comes from the unconfirmed minutes of the council’s August 19 meeting, follows a detailed Request for Proposal process that saw Re.Group selected to operate and maintain the facilities.

Mayor Patrick Hall said the arrangement would secure long-term waste services for residents and allow the city to tap into the expertise of a proven operator.

“The city undertook a detailed Request for Proposal process and Re.Group submitted the successful bid to operate and maintain the facilities and continue the waste management service provision on site,” he said.

“Re.Group are a nationally recognised leader in resource recovery and recycling, and the decision was made in conjunction with the cities of Fremantle and Melville. The site will continue to be used to help our community reduce waste and improve recycling outcomes, while drawing on the expertise and innovation of a proven operator. By partnering with Re.Group, the city is safeguarding long-term waste management services for residents and playing a part in advancing sustainable practices across the region.”

Mayor Hall said residents would not notice any change in how their bins are collected or in the way recyclables are processed.

“For residents, day-to-day services will continue as normal. There will be no change to how bins are presented or collected and no change to the processing of recyclable material,” he said.

“However, over time there is an expectation Re.Group will upgrade the recycling facility, further improving the city’s resource recovery. This means residents can be confident that the materials they place in their recycling bins are being handled in a modern, environmentally responsible way, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.”

The city said the new lease will provide a financial return on its land in Canning Vale while delivering better value waste services and upgrades to the site at no cost to ratepayers.

Mayor Hall noted the waste services agreement with Re.Group includes detailed requirements on environmental management, safety, resource recovery and operational performance.

“Re.Group will be held to the highest standards through compliance with regulatory licences and ongoing monitoring by the city and State authorities,” he said.

“Residents can provide their views on the statutory Business Plan during the public submission period. Submissions can be made online through the city’s engagement platform or in writing.”
