Members of the community are being encouraged to donate for practical relief and emotional support.

A simple act of adding one extra item to the shopping trolley is helping bring hope to more than 300 people experiencing family and domestic violence this Christmas.

The local Rossmoyne IGA is once again calling on locals to support its annual Christmas Appeal, partnering with Zonta House to create food hampers for women and families in need. The appeal has become a much-loved tradition for the store and the community, growing stronger each year.

Zonta House CEO Kelda Oppermann said the support means far more than the items inside the hampers.
“The hampers are so much more than food, they’re a message of hope and kindness… acknowledging their experience and letting them know people are on their side,” she said.

This is the fifth Christmas that Tucker Fresh IGA Rossmoyne has partnered with Zonta House, after the store team first reached out seven years ago wanting to help local families.

According to Oppermann, Christmas can present a range of challenges for those impacted by FDV, including safety concerns, financial stress, and the pressures associated with family gatherings.

She noted that the generosity provides both practical relief and emotional support at a time that can be especially difficult.

“Christmas for those experiencing family and domestic violence can present many challenges,” she said.
“These hampers are received in the spirit they are given — as a gift of support, recognition and relief.”

Feedback from previous years has described the hampers as providing “support, recognition and relief,” with some families saying it helped them contribute to Christmas events or eased pressure during the holiday period.

At the Rossmoyne store, staff say the appeal has become a significant part of their December routine.

Customer Service Manager Narelle Smyth said the community’s response has been “overwhelming”.

“Hamper-making day has been a major highlight for us,” she said.
“Seeing people’s generosity come to life feels so rewarding… that’s why we continue to do it each year.”

Last year, the appeal created around 130 hampers. Staff are hoping to exceed that number this year, with donations already coming in. One local woman even hand-makes Christmas cards for every hamper.

Smyth said many customers contribute small items, which collectively make a substantial difference.

“For me, Christmas is about giving, especially to people who aren’t as fortunate as us,” Smyth said.
“Please don’t underestimate the power of adding just one item. Even a small contribution is enough to make a meaningful difference to a family.”

Local shoppers have embraced the appeal. Bruce Groves, a regular customer, said contributing each year feels like the right thing to do.

“I just wanted to do my bit,” he said.
“It breaks my heart… it’s sad that families have to go through this. It’s such a small gesture for me, but it could mean a lot to someone else.”

Donations can be made at Tucker Fresh IGA Rossmoyne, located in the Rossmoyne Shopping Centre. Shoppers can purchase an extra non-perishable food item or Christmas treat and place it in the collection point under the store’s Christmas tree.
