A Kelmscott childcare centre was recognised last week for its dedication to being environmentally friendly.

Mundarda Child Care Centre on Challis Road was named a Switched on School through the Switch Your Thinking program for integrating sustainable practices into their operations.

These included purchasing green items, energy efficiency, reducing waste, water and electricity use.

City of Armadale deputy mayor Ruth Butterfield said the city was committed to sustainable practices and congratulated Mundarda for being recognised.

“I hope that the recognition will encourage the centre to continue embedding sustainability into their daily routine and set a positive example for other child care centres in the district to adopt sustainable practices,” she said.

“Just as with any early education the sustainable practices that the young children learn at the centre will be a stepping stone to adopting them into their lives at home and in the future.

“It is important we teach young children about the importance of our environmental footprint and how to reduce the impacts of waste.”

The children played their part by making playground displays out of recycled materials like clothes and bicycle parts.

Students were taught water was a precious resource and had begun washing their hands in buckets rather than a running tap and then pouring the dirty water onto the garden.

Mundarda Child Care Center was a participant in the not-for-profit program Little Green Steps WA, which supports education for sustainability in early year settings across the City of Armadale.
