The City of Canning has moved to secure funding for a $1.23 million sports lighting upgrade at Willetton Reserve.

According to the Unconfirmed Minutes of the Ordinary Council Meeting held on August 19, councillors voted unanimously to authorise a grant application to the State Government’s Club Night Lights Program for the 2026/27 forward planning round.

If successful, the program will contribute one third of the cost, up to $406,000, with the City to fund the remaining $827,000.

The project would lift the oval lighting from 50 lux to 100 lux, which would allow safer training, evening matches and greater use of the grounds year-round.

Willetton Reserve is home to Canning City Football Club, Willetton Baseball Club, Willetton Junior Cricket Club and Willetton Softball Association.

Canning City Football Club president Jeff Rowlands told the Examiner that the proposal was an important step for grassroots football in Willetton.

The club is greatly appreciative of the proposed lighting upgrade to 100 Lux from the council and the positive impact it will have on our club,” Mr Rowland said.

“With participation in football continuing to grow, this upgrade is critical to supporting our players and the community.

“Improved lighting will assist us in the full utilisation of the grounds for training across all age groups and create opportunities for the expansion of evening competition matches.

It’s a step forward for grassroots sport and will help us deliver a safer, more inclusive environment for players and spectators alike.”

If the grant is not successful, the City has noted it may need to adjust the project or stage works over multiple years.
