Motorists will now be forced to slow down in local school zones

Parents in Willetton can breathe a little easier this school term, with new speed limits now in place around key school zones and busy pedestrian areas.

The changes, which came into effect on April 23, are designed to improve safety for students, families, and the wider community.

The updated speed limits apply to sections of Pinetree Gully Road and Burrendah Boulevard; two roads that run through the heart of Willetton’s school and shopping precinct.

On Pinetree Gully Road, the speed limit between Kingsford Drive and Balboa Row is now 40km/h all day. This area includes Willetton Senior High School, Burrendah Primary, and Castlereagh School; all busy school zones with heavy foot traffic.

To boost safety even more, the City of Canning is rolling out additional upgrades on Pinetree Gully Road.

These include new traffic calming measures, a median island on Wainwright Close, and improvements to the pedestrian crossing. The works are part of the 2025–2026 Black Spot Program, backed by $343,500 in federal funding.

Over on Burrendah Boulevard, changes are also in effect. Between Vahland Avenue and Kennon Street, and between Karel Avenue and Burren Gate, the speed limit is now 50km/h. But the stretch between Kennon Street and Burren Gate, home to Willetton Basketball Stadium and Southlands Shopping Centre, has been reduced further to 40km/h due to high foot traffic.

City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the changes reflect the City’s ongoing commitment to safety.

“By implementing these new speed limits, we aim to create safer streets for everyone,” he said.

Willetton Senior High School Principal Trevor Hunter welcomed the move, especially with more than 2,700 students attending the school.

“Many students and families travel through the area throughout the day, often without crossing guards. These changes are both necessary and timely,” he said.

Sheri Evans, Principal of Burrendah Primary, agreed: “The safety of our children is paramount. These new speed limits will help create a more pedestrian-friendly environment around our school.”

Mayor Hall said the initiative is part of a broader strategy.

“We are committed to making Canning a welcoming and thriving community for all residents and visitors,” he said.
