The State Government’s highest law awards have opened for nominations from legal practitioners, law firms and not-for-profit organisations.
The Attorney General’s Community Service Law Awards recognises people working in the voluntary legal field to honour pro bono practices across WA at an individual or community-based level.
The awards have been running for 19 years in four different categories of Not-for-profit Organisation, Legal Aid Private Practitioner Panel Member, Individual, and Legal Firm.
State Attorney General and member for Armadale Tony Buti said he was excited to present the awards to members of the community who donate their professional skills to support others.
“It will be a privilege to present these awards which honour legal practitioners and organisations who generously donate their time and expertise to support those in need,” he said.
“These awards highlight the vital role of pro bono and community legal services in ensuring greater access to justice for underprivileged and vulnerable people.
“I encourage the nomination of those individuals and organisations doing exceptional pro bono work so they receive the recognition they deserve.
“While we celebrate outstanding contributions, we also hope these awards inspire others in the profession to give back through pro bono service.”
Last year, the Individual Award was received by Aboriginal justice champion Peter Collins for decades of commitment to the legal rights of people in the Aboriginal community.
Curtin Tax Clinic also won last year in the Not-for-Profit category, recognised for the pro bono tax service to marginalised people including people from remote and rural communities, and prisoners.
Nominations close Monday September 1 with the winners announced at the Law Society of WA Gala Dinner on Friday November 7.
