“Pass Wide and Slow” is this year’s road safety message for the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale as it continues to educate road users on the correct way to pass horses on the roads.
With the region’s growing population and increasing road use, ensuring the safety of everyone-whether they are driving, cycling, walking, or riding-remains a priority for the shire, as the state’s leading equine hub.
To raise awareness of safe road practices around horses, the shire will launch this year’s ‘Pass Wide and Slow’ campaign as part of Road Safety Week in May 2025, reinforcing the importance of cautious and responsible road use.

This initiative reminds all road users to approach horses with care, slow down, and give them plenty of space when passing.
The campaign will feature local rider Claire and her horse Blaze, who will help spread the message throughout May and beyond.
Shire President Rob Coales said horses are an important part of the community, and it’s important that all road users understand how to safely share the road with them.
“It’s easy for horses to get spooked by passing cars, motorbikes, eRideables and even bicycles and pedestrians, no matter how experienced their rider may be. By slowing down and giving horses plenty of space, we can prevent accidents and keep everyone safe,” President Coales said.
“By working together, we can create a safer environment for all road users in the shire.”
Residents are being encouraged to subscribe to the shire’s newsletter and follow its social media channels to stay informed about campaign updates and other important community initiatives.
