The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale will provide a recommendation to the State Government about the proposed Byford Health Hub (BHH) at the next council meeting on June 16.

The development application (DA) is being presented to council for formal comments.

The DA lists the subject lot as 4575 square metres and borders the new Metronet Byford Train Station, Byford Village Shopping Centre and Byford Railway line, located at the end of Bushman Glade.

Once opened, the Byford Health Hub is proposed to be two storeys, including 2725 square meters of a community building to accommodate up to 60 staff members and 90 patients.

The public carparks are proposed to be made up 60 bays which includes four accessible bays with additional ambulance bays, while the secure staff carpark has one accessible bay and 17 other bays.

Secured undercover bicycle parking, staff changerooms and lockers are included in the DA.

A building perimeter of native plants and trees for shaded public carpark spaces has also been added to the draft design plans.

Consulting rooms, multipurpose spaces and support amenities are proposed in the DA to treat a range of concerns including primary care, mental health, child and adolescence health, aged care and disability, and community and social services.

The BHH was first proposed by the State Labor Government in 2021 as an election commitment to support the growth of the SJ community.

At the SJ Ordinary Council Meeting on February 15, 2021, the council endorsed the BHH to be located on a portion of the Shire’s Public Purpose Reserve, within the Byford Activity Centre, opposite the Byford Metronet Rail Station.

The Health Hub would be co-located with the Shire’s future library and multi-purpose community facility, with the combination of these developments supporting a pedestrian accessibility between the station and town centre for a high number of amenity services.

On December 9 last year, the council approved an agreement between the Shire and coordinators of the health hub, East Metropolitan Health Services (EMHS).

Earthworks have been mostly completed on the land the BHH will be situated on, which the council said in a meeting on December 12, 2022, that the land was subdivided to EMHS rather than leased.

The decision to subdivide the land was made to develop a retail precinct, create various local roads connecting with the developed private driveways, a lot for recreation and drainage, and a lot for reserve public purposes at the Shire’s decisions.

Major main works are expected to begin on construction late this year.

The Cook Labor Government is also seeking expressions of interest from SJ community members to participate in the BHH Community Advisory Group, with applications closing on June 27.
