The Riverton RSL is reeling after thieves broke in and stole war memorabilia and artefacts for the third time in 10 months on October 6.

Riverton RSL president Bill Collidge said he was disappointed the thieves targeted the club for a third time.

“To break in three times is a despicable act,” he said.

“We are a local community-based club working hard to keep the club spirit alive and to look after our veterans’ welfare.

“We believe it’s the same group each time trying to steal our replica display firearms.

“They were successful in taking a German Mauser replica rifle from the wall display the first time and an Australian .303 replica rifle during the second break-in.

“These rifles have been disarmed so they are no longer capable of firing.

“This time the thieves have taken an historic Gurkha ceremonial knife that had been donated by one of our longstanding members.

“It is irreplaceable and he is devastated at its loss.”

Mr Collidge said the displays were for the public and he believed the thief or thieves had visited the club previously.

“Our facilities and displays are here for everyone to enjoy from elderly veterans through to our young cadets and the members of the broader community who visit our premises on club nights,” he said.

“It’s very disappointing that it looks like someone has been to our club, seen our displays and wants these rare items hanging on their wall, not ours.

“I urge whoever has taken our artefacts to please return them to us.

“They are an important part of our club and are highly valued by all members.”

Vice president Fran Ward said he was saddened because he mounted the weapons.

“I personally mounted the rifles so I put a lot of effort into it and it’s disappointing to see,” he said.

Anyone with information about the thefts or has seen any suspicious behaviour near the Riverton RSL should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at crimestopperswa.com.au.
