A warning has been issued after large increase in mosquito larvae has been detected in the Canning River Regional Park area.

Local residents have been warned about the risk of mosquito-born viruses.

The City of Canning is alerting the community to protect themselves against mosquito bites following a noted increase in larvae numbers throughout the Canning River Regional Park.

The City’s monitoring and treatment program had identified a significant increase in larvae numbers throughout the Canning River Regional Park, where these mosquitoes can impact the surrounding suburbs.

The program has been effective at managing numbers of larvae, which we will continue to monitor and treat, and ask the community to be a more vigilant in protecting themselves.

Simple actions you can take to avoid mosquito bites include:

  • Covering up as much as possible, with light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and covered footwear when outside.
  • Use an effective insect repellent on exposed skin and reapply within a few hours.
  • The best mosquito repellents contain Diethyl Toluamide (DEET), Picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Cover all windows, doors, vents and other entrances with insect screens.
  • Remove any water-holding containers located outside the house, as this is where mosquitoes could breed.
