‘Mayor can amend form’

City of Gosnells mayor Olwen Searle will not be investigated over claims she lied about her residential address despite it not ‘looking good’ according to Minister for Local Government Tony Simpson.

Last week Mrs Searle faced calls to step down as mayor when it was revealed she signed an oath that listed her residential address as being in Kenwick, despite the fact she has lived in Canning Vale in the City of Canning for the past 27 years.

This week Mr Simpson said he didn’t believe she had breached the Local Government Act and she would be able to amend the form to the Canning Vale address.

“From my perspective as the Minister it complies with the Act but councillors are accountable to their ratepayers hence why we have an election every two years, to have some transparency and democracy,” he said.

“She does own property in the City of Gosnells so she has a right to run for the position, she’s just put down the wrong address.

“It doesn’t look good though.”
