The City of Canning has officially opened its redeveloped Queens Park Open Space, now named Maniana Park, after a $7.1 million transformation supported by federal, local and sporting contributions.
The project includes a district-level adventure playground designed for children of all ages and abilities, a BMX pump track, upgraded cricket nets, a full-sized oval for football and soccer, and improved club facilities. A conservation area has also been established to support local bushland and biodiversity.
The Federal Government provided $5.3 million for the redevelopment, the City of Canning contributed $1.8 million, with WA Cricket and Cricket Australia through the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund contributing $40,000.
Mayor Patrick Hall said the park would quickly become a hub for community life.
“We’re excited to welcome the community into this outstanding space. Maniana Park brings together play, sport and nature, providing opportunities for recreation and connection for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities,” he said.

Federal Member for Swan Zaneta Mascarenhas said the project had been a commitment made during the 2022 election.
“While doorknocking in Queens Park during the election campaign, I met countless local families who shared their hopes for a space where kids could play, connect with nature, and stay active. Revamping Maniana Park quickly became a clear priority – and I’m so proud to see that promise now fulfilled,” she said.
She said the Australian Government’s 5.3 million contribution covered nearly three-quarters of the total project cost, funding new lighting, bushland conservation areas, and recreational and sporting facilities.

Ms Mascarenhas added that Federal Government had also invested $16.25 million in the nearby Sam Kerr Football centre and dedicated a further $1.75 million to upgrading changerooms and facilities for women and girls at Maniana Park.
Residents have already begun sharing their reactions online. One local asked whether the City would be responsible for the upkeep of barbecues and toilets, to which the Mayor replied that maintenance would be handled by the City.
Others expressed nostalgia and excitement about the site. “This makes me so nostalgic. I went to the kindy there,” one comment read. Another resident said the new pump track made the area “feel like a little paradise town of BMX and skate parks.”
The park, located at the corner of Gibb Street and Whitlock Road, is expected to host community events and serve as a central gathering place for Queens Park and surrounding suburbs.
