More than 30 families have been receiving food hampers as the Salvation Army continues to lend a helping hand to the community.

Since March 25, the Salvos team has been completing all operations by phone, yet a few volunteers in their 70s are still coming in to help out with the welfare operations on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Pauline McCormack and Maureen Stearn are interviewing the community to find out what they need and how they can find a way to help them get through the health crisis.

“People say they are short of money, they can’t afford food, rent or bills, so they come to us for help,” they said.

“At this time, we can only help with food, although in normal times we do give some help with bills.

“We are glad we are able to help those in need, following the teachings of Jesus.

“We are all in this together, so please follow the guidelines set for us and we will get through it.”

The food hampers had a mixture of non-perishable and fresh food, including baked beans, spaghetti, cereal, pasta, bread, milk, fresh fruit and vegetables.

The Salvation Army Headquarters welfare sections will remain open, although the churches are closed until further notice.
