Scottish strength and speed will be on show in Armadale on Sunday as the highland gathering and Perth kilt run roll into Minnawarra park.

Mount Richon strongman and former Australian weightlifter Jay Wallace has competed in the highland gathering’s heavy events since 2000.

He said this year there was an impressive group of athletes competing including WA’s strongest man Rongo Keene.

“The heavy events have been going for 20 years now, they add to the fun of the whole day,” he said.

“Even though the guys who are doing it have a red hot crack at the events there’s still a lot of fun, everyone’s joking and laughing.”

Armadale mayor Henry Zelones said the highland gathering and kilt run was a highlight in the city’s events calendar and the city would again attempt to break the kilt run record.

For the past two years Perth has competed against its namesake cities in Scotland and Canada to claim the title for the greatest number of kilt runners, currently held by Perth, Canada.
