WA growers are encouraged to put their harvests to the quality test.

A competition for WA growers to showcase their agriculture and agronomic skills will be held by the Grower Group Alliance (GGA).

The on-farm Grain Legume crop-etition will allow farmers and growers to prove their skills in five categories of key legume crops including chickpeas, faba beans, field peas, lentils, and lupins.

One winner per crop will be announced, judged on the quality of the grain per kilogram or hectare, with the five winners receiving a $2000 gift card for Crown Perth.

GGA head of projects Daniel Kidd said the free competition was a fun way to increase WA’s grain profile quality.

“Grain legumes have great potential in Western Australian farming systems, but we often underestimate their productive potential and don’t necessarily value the other system benefits they provide,” he said.

“This Crop-etition gives growers the chance to demonstrate recent advances in grain legume agronomy and crop genetics to see what yields can be achieved in Western Australian soils and climate conditions.

“It’s more than just a yield race – it’s about sharing knowledge and promoting grain legumes as a profitable, sustainable option for Western Australia farms.”

WA growers must have a minimum of a 50-hectare paddock of one of the grain categories, grown under rainfed conditions with soil characteristics, crop type and variety being disclosed to judged to be eligible to enter the competition.

Entries have already opened but winners won’t be announced until the end of harvest season.
